Eugenie Bouchard has been named the most marketable athlete in the world by SportsPro media.

The annual Top 50 includes athletes from around the world have been ranked according to their marketing potential over a three-year period from this summer. Their potential is measured according to the following criteria:

Value for money

Age

Home market

Charisma

Willingness to be marketed

Crossover appeal

Bouchard beat out the likes of Neymar, Masters champion Jordan Spieth, Missy Franklin, and Formula driver Lewis Hamilton for top spot on this year’s list. LeBron James and Usain Bolt are among the athletes who have been atop the list in the past.

There is no escaping it, so there is no point in trying: Eugenie Bouchard has had a year to forget so far in 2015. The consistency that saw the Canadian win her first WTA Tour title and reach two semis and a final in Grand Slams in 2014 has evaporated into an all-too-distant memory. A losing record and a string of first-round exits since the turn of the year have raised questions over whether she has the temperament or the talent to reach the heights many were tipping her for less than 12 months ago.

Yet sport is about struggle as much as success. Though some will claim that topping this list is her only hope of a number one ranking, the reality is that Bouchard, forced to shoulder the burden of being anointed the future of women’s tennis after her breakthrough year, is a work in progress. And while there will be those who point gravely towards a lengthy line of hyped-up youngsters who have promised so much and gone on to win so little, there are no grounds to write her off just yet.

Courted for many months by multiple management agencies, Bouchard completed her long-speculated move from Lagardère Unlimited to WME│IMG in December, teaming up with an industry powerhouse that has helped turn Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova into the two highest earners in women’s sport. Backed by representatives with such reach and influence, there are few sectors into which Team Bouchard will not venture as she attempts to emulate her great stable mates on and off the court.

On unveiling Bouchard, for example, the WME│IMG communications department made a point of highlighting the fact that she had also been signed to IMG Models, a division of the company with designs on expanding her presence in the fashion industry. Within weeks they had her tirelessly doing the rounds on an orchestrated promotional drive, strutting along fashion show catwalks, gracing the covers of glossy consumer magazines and posing alongside everyone from supermodel Hannah Davis to pop star Beyoncé.

Set against her recent on-court nadir, the doubters will insist such attention is but an unwanted and unwarranted distraction; that Bouchard, with her solitary title, is somehow undeserving of the fuss and fanfare that has heralded her arrival. But the WTA, for one, wouldn’t have it any other way. At 21 and, for now at least, inside the world’s top ten, the gregarious girl from Montreal embodies everything the tour has become; a glamorous, global and staunchly driven reminder of why the WTA, an organisation built on gender equality and enhancing opportunities for women, exists in the first place.

In the end, earnings of over US$4 million and counting do not lie. Women’s sport, led by the WTA, has never been stronger and Bouchard is at the sharp end of a global movement that is only just getting started. ML
