Elle Maria right now you are wearing the engagement ring Sasha gave to you ? ( Sharapova is dating Slovenian basketball player Sasha Vujacic; in October 2010 young people announced their engagement .Expert estimate Maria`s ring is worth 250.00$ ) It is very difficult to turn away your look from it .It`s very beautiful

Maria Sharapova Yes that′s it (laughing takes another look on it)

Elle Who is the first person you called after he said to you `Will you marry me`

Maria Sharapova My mom of course .After that my best friends

Elle And dad ?

Maria Sharapova The engagement happened in USA and my dad was in Russia ,you know time difference ,it was nigh over there .Yes dad… (laughing) This is all not interesting to him ,to be honest  .He and Sasha talked about it before.

Elle  So Sasha asked your father for your hand ?

Maria Sharapova Yes. Dad knew, that one day it will happen and for the rest he doesn′t care

Elle Only that his daughter plays good ?

Maria Sharapova Yes (laughing) On court everything is good ? Well, thank God .

Elle You are russian ,but you live in USA .Sasha is from Slovenia. What language do you speak at home ?

M.S.  Sasha knows serbian and italian and we have english in common .He better understands russian than i`m understanding him in his language.When he speaks to his parents  i can understand some parts ,some words are similar. And he ,i don`t know maybe he is learning russian silently .

Elle Do you know what is  polenta ?

M.S. No...

Elle It`s kasha in slovenian .Do you cook something for Sasha ?

M.S. For Sasha or for us? (laughing) .I love to cook ,but i don`t have much time so to say .Especially when i′m training all day long . When we are home we say to each other :” well let`s buy groceries and we′ll make something “ At 6 pm we are sitting and thinking...

Elle  “...maybe we′ll order a pizza “

M.S.  Hahaha no, we call our parents :” We are coming to see you now! Did you make something good?” They are always happy to see us.In general we are family people and we like to spend time at home.

Elle  Is there a dish from russian cuisine he can only try at your parents ?

M.S.  No ,sometimes i cook. For example meat salad .

Elle  Like olive ?

M.S.  When i say “olive” ,that`s probably french salad .That`s why i always call it “meat” .I can make borsch .But it`s difficult to make

Elle  How many times did they ask you “Will you marry me”

M.S.  Just once .

Elle   That can′t be true! You are -well known bride , beautiful and athlete and you cook !

M.S.  On court i sometimes hear ”Will you marry me” or something similar.But i try  not to think about it .

Elle  Have you ever met someone who left you speechless ?

M.S.  I met Tom Ford …

Elle   Oh...

M.S.  Yes. I didn`t talk to him ,we just took a picture together .It was obvious he was very confident and that he knows he is talented .It can be felt even during a handshake.It was great even though i was standing next to Tom for only few minutes.

Elle  After that he went home :” Yes i took a picture with Maria Sharapova”

M.S.  Ha-ha ,i don`t think so .

Elle What was the most unexpected reaction from a stranger ?

M.S.  It`s weird when strangers approach and start talking to you as if they knew you.It`s difficult to let strangers near you .Many write letters,send you gifts and say...

Elle “ Will you marry me ,will you marry me!”

M.S.  No rather ”we should meet ,our lives are very similar” .Sometimes i send autographs if they ask  but i never answer to the letters

Elle  And what do you do with weird  gifts ? 

M.S.  It depends how weird they are (smiling) .Something expensive they rarely give .For me the best gift is- when little girl is spending time in her room before sleep drawing card or something for me

Elle They say there is a tennis tradition :  well known athlete is giving racquet to the beginner.You received Kafelnikov`s racquet when you were young .Did you gave yours to someone . 

M.S. Nobody. asked

Elle All they need is to simply ask? Now probably  little girls will not only send you self made cards but requests for  your racquet

M.S. We asked for Kafelnikov`s racquet bc my father played with his father in Sochi .They pruned the racquet (it was too big for me ) and i played with it

Elle Your parents put everything at stake ,so you could become a tennis star .Now that you are on top can you say what percentage  of your success belongs to you and what to your parents ?

M.S.  I would say that all my success belongs to them .When i was 7 they decided :” We`ll leave our jobs and our lifes and go to USA and we`ll try to do something in foreign country”.Without their will and attention i wouldn′t reach anything in tennis

Elle And with whom you had  a better trusted relationship ,with mom or dad ?

M.S. Dad was always about tennis and giving me moral support .For mom in first place was always education.She took me to ballet ,followed my schoolwork .Even if we lived in USA i  was engaged in russian language every night.

Elle Where is your home now ?

M.S. My home is in California and Florida

Elle  No,we know you have properties there .But home ?

M.S. (thinking) I would say in Florida.  My home is where my family is.Mom is now here with me ,my dad is in California and Sasha is in Turkey. That`s why i can`t understand where i live.Already two  months i`m on the road

Elle When you finish your career and decide to settle in one place.Where would you like to live?

M.S. I think in America.I`m used to living there,i have friends there and i built my life there .I like coming to Russia but to live here and drive a car...no   

Elle  When was the last time you didn`t sleep at night ?

M.S. Probably on a plane.I`m not going out during nights and i really like to sleep. And if i don`t get  enough sleep it`s better not to be near me.

Elle Today ,we were lucky .In what language do you dream  ?

M.S. In english and russian .When i call my grandmother in Sochi ,we often tell each other about our dreams. Recently i dreamed about being with my family and Sasha`s family and we had a big holiday. We have not gather all together in a long time so i dreamed about something i really want .

Elle You have been ambassador for Tag Heuer for 7 years.How many watches do you have ?

M.S.  A lot !

Elle Your favorite is ?

M.S.  From man collection. I`m traveling often and i don`t like to carry many earrings,bracelets I`m generally very simple and from jewerly i prefer wearing one.My favorite is Carrera and they have woman collection ,but i prefer the man collection bc i`m tall and i have long hands so the bigger the watch  the better it looks on me. A few years ago we worked on a line Formula 1 Lady.They asked :”what`s your favorite color”- - “Pink ofc” ! That was the first Tag Heuer line for women and they had watches with pink strap,pink clock face and diamonds.

Elle You don`t wear Sasha`s watch ?

M.S. No ( Sly smiles. It seems we planted her an idea) But i gave him a couple of watches.

Elle  For whom did you cheer in Australian open final ?

M.S. I`m friends with Novak Djokovic,so for him

Elle  He is so cute and with a great sense of humor.Did you  feel offended bc of imitation he was doing?

M.S.   Well yes he is interesting .No i didn`t feel offended .It`s good for the tennis that someone has that energy,humor

Elle And who do you think he imitates the best ?

M.S. I don`t think it`s me (laughing) I think it`s John Mcenroe or Pete Sampras .

Elle In your blog you wrote you would like to sing with Justin Timberlake .Did you?

M.S. No. I like music and sometimes i sing karaoke at home.With friends but for myself

Elle Do you sing in the shower?

M.S. It happens. Something from Cher

Elle Perfect song for the acoustics in the bathroom !

M.S. Sometimes i`m great in it .In those moments ,i`m confident i even think that i have a wonderful voice

Elle What are you afraid of ?

M.S. I don`t like dentists .In general very few things scare me .I`m not afraid of losing.

Elle You are not afraid of crying in public bc of defeat ?

M.S. I`m not afraid of crying but i`ve never cried in public.

Elle But in general you cry? At home ?

M.S. Ofc there are moments. That`s life. Who doesn`t cry ?
