2013 GP3 champion Daniil Kvyat has secured his Formula 1 superlicense, just in time for his first practice runs for Toro Rosso at the United States and Brazilian Grands Prix.
The Russian driver, who will replace Red Bull-bound Daniel Ricciardo at Toro Rosso next season, completed a test session in a two year old car last Friday. Kvyat was announced as a Formula 1 driver for the 2014 season ahead of the Indian Grand Prix.
It came as quite a shock, with many expecting Antonio Felix da Costa or Carlos Sainz Jr to replace Ricciardo at the Faenza based outfit. The 19-year-oldwon the GP3 title over the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend with one race to spare.
He headed to the Yas Marina Circuit with a seven point deficit to rival Facu Regalia but dominated the first race on Saturday before finishing fifth in race two. Some believe Toro Rosso have made the wrong choice, as the youngster will sidestep GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5 - series' that sit directly above GP3 on the ladder to Formula 1.
To get him prepared for his debut next season, Kvyat will take over Jean-Eric Vergne's car in first practice for the United States Grand Prix and will replace Ricciardo in Brazil. However, he needed to obtain the required superlicense to take part in the F1 race weekends.
He completed 102 laps - equivalent to 402 kilometres - at the wheel of the Toro Rosso STR6 at the Misano circuit in Italy, a statement released by the team on their website confirmed.
